It is going to be hard for me to objectively write this review. Mainly because my thoughts are clouded by annoyance. “Why?” you might be asking. Well let me tell you. Berserker #0 provides 8 pages worth of story, but that isn’t the annoying part. The annoying part is the fact that it costs $2.99. Yes, for the price of a full issue you get 8 pages worth of story. Anyways, now that that is out of the way, on to the review.
Story: Farris Jorn is a soldier who returned from Afghanistan where he was captured and tortured. Now, he is undergoing therapy for his post traumatic stress disorder. During this session, he flashes back to what happened to him. During the torture Jorn goes completely bat shit and enters an uncontrollable rage. He unleashes his fury on everyone, hence the title Berserker. The 8 pages that you get in Berserker #0 are mediocre at best. The dialogue is weak and, at times, very predictable. Some times it seems like it was ripped straight from a cheesy 80′s action flick. It really did nothing to want me to continue this series.
Art: The saving grace of this Berserker #0 is the art. It was handled by Jeremy Haun and some of the pages were very intense. If I was to continue this book it would be due to Haun’s art, not the story. The pages when Jorn goes berserk are awesome and really showcase what he is now capable of
Overall: If you don’t pick up this issue you aren’t missing much. I would actually wait until a full issue comes out so you actually get your $2.99 worth. At first, I didn’t even realize the book was $2.99 because it was rung up with like 10 other books, so I didn’t pay much attention. When I was staring at the cover for a bit I noticed the price tag and almost went Berserker myself.
